Rikers Island Correctional Facility is an adult jail where “adult” starts at 16 years old. Along with some concerned captains, DUI and Calvin Bacote started a weekly mentoring program for the youth incarcerated at this jail. Every week, they were lectured and had open dialogue teaching them that they weren’t the sum of their mistakes. During the run of this program, we were able to help redirect some young men, reduce recidivism and slow down the street to prison pipeline.
